"The state of life which is constituted by the profession of the evangelical counsels,
while not entering into the hierarchical structure of the Church, belongs undeniably to her life and holiness." CCC 914
Religious life in the Catholic Church consists of a variety of groups called orders. Some of these orders are strictly for men, others strictly for women and some consist of branches for both. Many of these orders include but are not limited too: The Franciscans, The Dominicans, The Jesuits and The Legionaries of Christ. While almost every order lives in a community in some way, the daily life of a religious nun, friar or monk varies by order. The common goal of making disciples for Christ, however, remains solid within them all.
Religious life as with all vocations is one of sacrifice, however, sacrifice is emphasized more within religious life as the primary goal of almost every religious order is rooted in prayer and constant sacrifice for the world and culture around us. Whether these orders perform these tasks within a cloistered convent or within a school or seminary, a discerner to this life should ask themselves if they are ready to serve in whatever capacity God will give them.
